Crispy Jalapeño Popper Wonton Cups: a Party Favorite

Easy Jalapeño Popper Cups
Easy Jalapeño Popper Cups

If you love jalapeño poppers, these Easy Jalapeño Popper Cups give you all that creamy, cheesy, bacon-filled goodness tucked inside a crispy wonton shell. They’re crunchy around the edges, creamy in the middle, a little spicy, and loaded with bacon and cheddar cheese.

I especially love these for game day parties because they’re so much easier to serve than traditional jalapeño poppers. Everyone gets their own little wonton cup appetizer, there’s no frying involved, and you can make an entire batch with just a handful of simple ingredients.

Between the cream cheese, sour cream, crispy bacon bits, cheddar, and fresh jalapeños, these little cups have everything I want in a perfect party appetizer.

Why You’ll Love These Jalapeño Popper Cups

Easy Jalapeño Popper Cups

These jalapeño popper wonton cups are one of those appetizers that look like you put in way more effort than you actually did.

Here’s why I love them:

  • Crispy, creamy, cheesy, and a little spicy
  • Only 6 main ingredients
  • No deep fryer required
  • Ready in about 30 minutes
  • Easy to adjust to your spice preference
  • Perfect for football season and the Super Bowl
  • Easy to pick up and eat
  • Great for holiday parties and potlucks
  • The wontons stay nice and crunchy because they’re baked before filling

They’re basically traditional jalapeño poppers turned into crispy, cheesy little cups.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Wonton Wrappers

You’ll need 12 wonton wrappers. These become our crispy wonton cups and make this recipe so easy.

You can usually find wonton wrappers in the refrigerated area of larger grocery stores, often somewhere around the produce section.

Cream Cheese

Use 4 ounces of softened cream cheese.

Letting the cream cheese come closer to room temperature makes it much easier to combine with the other filling ingredients.

Sour Cream

You’ll need ½ cup sour cream. It loosens up the cream cheese and gives the filling a smooth, creamy consistency.

Bacon

Cook and crumble 7 slices of bacon.

Reserve about 3 slices worth of the crispy bacon bits for sprinkling over the tops.

Cheddar Cheese

You’ll need 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese, reserving about 3 tablespoons for topping.

Fresh Jalapeños

Use 3–4 fresh jalapeños, seeded and chopped.

Removing the seeds and membranes keeps the heat more manageable. If you like a stronger kick of spice, leave some of them intact.

How to Make Jalapeño Popper Wonton Cups

Easy Jalapeño Popper Cups

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

Preheat the oven to 325°F.

Coat a standard muffin pan thoroughly with nonstick cooking spray.

Make sure you get the bottom and sides of each muffin cup so the wontons release easily after baking.

Step 2: Make the Crispy Wonton Cups

Gently press one wonton wrapper into each cavity of the muffin pan.

Don’t worry about making them perfectly shaped. Those uneven, pointed edges are part of what makes the finished crispy wonton shell look so good.

Bake the empty wonton wrappers for about 10 minutes, or until they’re lightly golden brown.

Remove the muffin pan from the oven and let the cups cool slightly.

Pre-baking is important because it gives you a crispy baked wonton cup sturdy enough to hold all that creamy filling without becoming soggy.

Step 3: Make the Jalapeño Popper Filling

While the wonton cups cool, make the filling.

In a medium bowl, combine:

  • Softened cream cheese
  • Sour cream
  • Crumbled bacon, reserving some for topping
  • Shredded cheddar cheese, reserving 3 tablespoons
  • Chopped jalapeño peppers

Mix until the cream cheese mixture is evenly combined.

You should have a thick, creamy cheese mixture with bacon and jalapeño in every spoonful.

Step 4: Fill the Wonton Cups

Spoon the filling evenly into your pre-baked wonton cups.

Don’t overfill them. You want enough of that spicy filling to make every bite creamy without completely covering those crispy wonton edges.

Sprinkle the reserved cheddar cheese and pieces of bacon over the top.

Step 5: Bake Again

Return the muffin pan to the oven.

Bake for another 8–10 minutes, or until the filling is hot, the cheese has melted, and the wonton edges are beautifully golden brown.

Let them cool for a few minutes before carefully removing them from the muffin pan.

Serve warm and watch them disappear!

Why Bake the Wonton Wrappers First?

This extra step makes a big difference.

If you put the filling directly into uncooked wonton wrappers, the moisture from the cream cheese mixture can prevent the bottom of the wrappers from becoming as crisp.

Giving the wrappers a head start creates sturdier crispy wonton cups before the filling goes in.

That means you get the contrast that makes these so good: a hot, creamy center surrounded by a crunchy shell.

How Spicy Are Jalapeño Popper Cups?

Easy Jalapeño Popper Cups

That mostly depends on your jalapeños.

For a milder appetizer, remove the seeds and pale membranes from the inside of the jalapeño peppers before chopping them.

For more heat, leave some of the membrane intact or add a few seeds to the filling.

If you’re serving these at a party where everyone has a different spice preference, I recommend making the base recipe on the milder side. You can always serve hot sauce on the side for anyone who wants more heat.

Variations

One of the best things about this recipe is how easy it is to change.

Make Them Spicier

Swap some of the cheddar for Pepper Jack cheese or leave more of the jalapeño membrane intact.

Add Green Onions

Finely chopped green onions add freshness and a little extra onion flavor.

Add Garlic

Mix a small amount of garlic powder into the filling.

Add Onion Powder

A pinch of onion powder is another easy way to give the filling a little more savory flavor.

Change the Cheese

Instead of cheddar, try:

  • Colby Jack
  • Pepper Jack
  • Monterey Jack
  • Mozzarella cheese

You can also mix a couple of cheeses together.

What to Serve With Jalapeño Popper Cups

These don’t really need a dipping sauce because the centers are already creamy, but that doesn’t mean you can’t add one.

Try serving them with:

  • Ranch dressing
  • Blue cheese dressing
  • Hot sauce
  • Salsa
  • Guacamole
  • Sour cream

A cool ranch dressing is especially good if you’ve made your cups a little spicier.

Perfect for Game Day

If you’re putting together a Super Bowl menu, these absolutely belong on it.

They’re easy to grab, don’t require a knife and fork, and have all those flavors people expect from good game day food: bacon, cheese, jalapeños, and something crispy.

You can also make several batches without spending the entire game standing over hot oil.

Serve them for:

  • Super Bowl parties
  • Football season
  • Birthday parties
  • Holiday parties
  • Potlucks
  • Family gatherings
  • New Year’s Eve
  • Cinco de Mayo
  • Tailgating
  • Your next party

They’re also a perfect snack for a casual movie or game night at home.

Can I Make These in a Mini Muffin Tin?

Standard wonton wrappers fit best in a regular muffin pan.

You can experiment with a mini muffin tin, but you’ll need to trim or fold the wrappers more aggressively and use less filling in each cup.

For the easiest method and the best ratio of creamy filling to crispy wonton shell, I prefer a standard muffin pan.

Can You Make Jalapeño Popper Cups in the Air Fryer?

You can reheat these beautifully in an air fryer, but for preparing a full batch, I prefer the oven and muffin pan method.

The muffin pan supports the wonton wrappers as they bake and gives you that distinctive cup shape.

Tips for the Best Jalapeño Popper Wonton Cups

Soften Your Cream Cheese

Softened cream cheese combines much more easily with the sour cream and other filling ingredients.

Cook the Bacon Until Crisp

You want genuinely crisp bacon here. The crunch and smoky flavor make a noticeable difference against the creamy filling.

After cooking, transfer the bacon to a paper towel to remove excess grease before crumbling it.

Don’t Skip Pre-Baking

Those first 10 minutes are how we get the crispy wonton cups that make this appetizer so good.

Don’t Overfill

Leave some of the wonton exposed around the edges so it can continue crisping during the second bake.

Adjust the Jalapeños

Three jalapeños will generally give you a milder filling than four. How much membrane you remove will also affect the heat.

Watch the Wonton Edges

Wonton wrappers are thin and can go from perfectly golden to too dark fairly quickly. Keep an eye on them during the final few minutes.

Can I Make These Ahead of Time?

You can do some of the prep ahead.

Cook and crumble the bacon, chop the jalapeños, and prepare the creamy cheese mixture ahead of time. Keep the filling covered in the refrigerator.

You can also pre-bake the wonton shells.

For the best texture, I recommend filling and completing the final bake close to serving time. That gives you the best contrast between the creamy filling and crispy shell.

How to Store Leftover Jalapeño Popper Cups

Allow leftover cups to cool, then place them in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

They’ll lose some of their crispness while refrigerated because the wonton shell absorbs moisture from the filling, but they reheat surprisingly well.

How to Reheat Jalapeño Popper Cups

The oven or air fryer is the best way to bring back the crispy texture.

Reheat them until the filling is hot and the wonton shell has crisped again.

I wouldn’t choose the microwave unless you’re in a hurry. It will warm the filling, but the wrappers will be much softer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you find wonton wrappers at the grocery store?

They’re usually refrigerated rather than kept with dried pasta or tortillas. Check around the produce section or other refrigerated Asian ingredients. The exact location varies by grocery store.

Do I need to remove the jalapeño seeds?

You don’t have to, but I recommend removing the seeds and membranes if you want a more crowd-friendly appetizer. Leave some behind if you enjoy spicy food.

Can I substitute Pepper Jack for cheddar?

Yes. Pepper Jack is a great choice if you want even more jalapeño flavor and heat.

Can I leave out the bacon?

Absolutely. The bacon adds smoky flavor and crunch, but the cream cheese, cheddar, sour cream, and jalapeños are still delicious without it.

How do I keep wonton cups crispy?

Pre-bake the wrappers before adding your filling and serve the finished cups relatively soon after baking. Refrigerating filled cups will naturally soften the wrappers.

Can I double the recipe?

Yes! This easy appetizer recipe is very easy to double or triple for a larger party. Just use additional muffin pans or bake them in batches.
