Ingredients You’ll Need
Chicken
- 4 chicken breasts
Lemon Butter Sauce and Seasonings
- ½ cup butter, cut into pieces
- ¼ cup lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon lemon pepper seasoning
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 lemon, sliced
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Why Lemon Pepper Works So Well With Chicken

Lemon pepper seasoning gives you two things chicken breast really benefits from: acidity and peppery flavor.
The citrus brightens the chicken while the black pepper gives it a savory bite. When you combine that with fresh lemon juice, butter, paprika, and garlic powder, you get a chicken dinner that tastes much more flavorful than the short ingredient list would suggest.
If you like even more citrus flavor, add a little lemon zest over the chicken before serving.

Buy Now → How to Make Lemon Pepper Chicken Breast
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 400°F.
Lightly grease a 13×9-inch baking dish if needed.
Step 2: Arrange the Chicken
Place the chicken breasts in the baking dish in a single layer.
If your chicken breasts are especially thick, you can use a sharp knife to slice them into thinner pieces or lightly pound them with a meat mallet so they cook more evenly.
Thin-cut chicken breast will cook faster than very thick chicken breasts, so always use temperature rather than the clock alone to determine doneness.
Step 3: Add the Lemon Juice
Pour the fresh lemon juice evenly over the chicken.
Make sure some of the juice gets around the sides of the chicken and into the bottom of the pan.
As the chicken bakes, the lemon combines with the butter and chicken juices to create a simple butter sauce.
Step 4: Season the Chicken
In a small bowl, combine:
- Lemon-pepper seasoning
- Paprika
- Garlic powder
- Salt
- Black pepper
Sprinkle the seasoning mixture evenly over the chicken breasts.
Make sure all sides of the chicken are well seasoned for the best flavor.
Step 5: Add the Butter
Place 1 tablespoon of butter on top of each chicken breast.
Cut the remaining butter into small pieces and scatter it around the chicken in the baking dish.
As the butter melts, it combines with the lemon juice and seasonings, creating a rich, flavorful sauce.
Step 6: Add Fresh Lemon Slices
Slice one fresh lemon and arrange the fresh lemon slices on top of and around the chicken.
The lemon slices infuse the sauce with even more citrus flavor as everything bakes.
Step 7: Bake
Bake uncovered at 400°F for 30–45 minutes, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.
Use an instant-read thermometer or digital meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the chicken breast to check.
The exact cooking time will depend on the thickness and size of your chicken breasts.
How to Keep Chicken Breasts Juicy
Chicken breasts can dry out quickly if they’re overcooked, so a meat thermometer is your best friend here.
The chicken is done when it reaches 165°F in the thickest portion.
A few other tips:
Use Similar-Sized Chicken Breasts
If one chicken breast is much larger than the others, it will take longer to cook.
Don’t Overbake
Start checking the internal temperature around the 30-minute mark.
Spoon the Sauce Over the Chicken
That buttery lemon mixture at the bottom of the pan helps keep each piece moist and adds even more flavor.
Let the Chicken Rest
Let the chicken rest for about 5 minutes before slicing so the juices have time to redistribute.
Can I Use Chicken Thighs?
Yes.
Boneless skinless chicken thighs work very well with lemon pepper seasoning and are naturally a little more forgiving because of their higher fat content.
Their cooking time may differ, so again, use a thermometer rather than relying only on the clock.
Can I Use Chicken Cutlets?
Absolutely.
Chicken cutlets or thin-cut chicken breast cook much more quickly than full chicken breasts.
Check them early—often after about 15–20 minutes, depending on thickness.
Can I Use Chicken Tenders?
Yes.
Chicken tenders are another easy option and work well if you’re cooking for kids or want smaller portions.
They cook quickly, so check for doneness much sooner than full chicken breasts.
Easy Variations
Add Red Pepper Flakes
For a little heat, sprinkle in a pinch of red pepper flakes.
Add Fresh Parsley
Finish the chicken with fresh parsley for color and freshness.
Add Lemon Zest
A little fresh lemon zest over the finished chicken adds another layer of bright citrus flavor.
Add Chicken Broth
If you want more extra sauce for serving over rice or potatoes, add a small splash of chicken broth to the baking dish.
Add White Wine
A little white wine can give the butter sauce extra depth, especially if you’re serving this for a dinner that feels a little more special.
Make It Creamy
For a creamy variation, you can make a separate sauce with chicken broth, heavy cream, butter, lemon, and Parmesan.
What to Serve With Lemon Pepper Chicken Breast

This chicken is versatile enough to pair with everything from potatoes to vegetables to salads.
Here are some recipes from Krystel’s Cooking that would go especially well with it.
Red Roasted Potatoes
My Red Roasted Potatoes are one of the best pairings for this chicken. They’re crispy, garlicky, and finished with Parmesan, and the lemon butter sauce tastes amazing spooned alongside them.
Cheesy Au Gratin Potatoes
If you want a richer dinner, creamy au gratin potatoes balance the bright lemon flavor beautifully.
Loaded Twice Baked Potatoes
For something more indulgent, loaded twice-baked potatoes with bacon, cheese, sour cream, and green onions turn this into a hearty comfort-food meal.
Bacon Cheddar Potato Wedges
These are great for a more casual family dinner and pair well with the buttery chicken.
Garlic Parmesan Roasted Shrimp
For a surf-and-turf-style dinner, my Garlic Parmesan Roasted Shrimp uses similar garlic, lemon, Parmesan, and herb flavors, so the two recipes complement each other naturally.
Parmesan Lemon Pepper Chicken
If you love this flavor combination, my Parmesan Lemon Pepper Chicken takes it in a richer skillet direction with Parmesan, cream, Dijon mustard, wine, and lemon.
Easy Creamy Lemon Chicken Breast
For another lemony chicken dinner, my Easy Creamy Lemon Chicken Breast has a creamy Parmesan sauce made with lemon, chicken broth, garlic, and white wine.
Simple Side Dish Ideas
If you want to keep dinner light, serve this with:
- Green beans
- Steamed broccoli
- Roasted asparagus
- Brown rice
- White rice
- Cauliflower rice
- A simple side salad
- Garlic bread
For busy weeknights, green beans and rice are especially easy choices.
Can I Make Lemon Pepper Chicken in the Air Fryer?
Yes.
Season the chicken as directed, then cook it in the air fryer at about 375–380°F until the internal temperature reaches 165°F.
The exact time depends on the thickness of the chicken.
Because this recipe includes quite a bit of butter and lemon juice, I recommend preparing the butter sauce separately and spooning it over the chicken after air frying rather than putting all the liquid directly into the basket.
Can I Make This on the Stovetop?
Yes.
Heat a little olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Season the chicken and sear for about 3–4 minutes per side, depending on thickness, until golden brown and cooked through.
Remove the chicken, lower the heat to medium, then add butter and lemon juice to the skillet.
Scrape up the browned bits from the bottom for an easy pan sauce.
Return the chicken to the pan and spoon the sauce over the top.
How to Make Homemade Lemon Pepper Seasoning
Store-bought lemon-pepper seasoning is the easiest option, but you can make your own with:
- Fresh lemon zest
- Black pepper
- Garlic powder
- Salt
Spread the zest out briefly so it loses some moisture before combining it with the other seasonings.
Homemade seasoning gives you control over the salt and lets you adjust how lemony or peppery you want the chicken.
How to Store Leftovers
Allow the chicken to cool before transferring it to an airtight container.
Store in the refrigerator for 3–4 days.
Keep some of the lemon butter sauce with the chicken so it stays moist.
The chicken is delicious the next day sliced over salads, rice bowls, or pasta.
How to Reheat Lemon Pepper Chicken
Oven
Place the chicken in a baking dish with a little of the leftover sauce or a splash of chicken broth.
Cover loosely and warm at 325°F until heated through.
Stovetop
Warm gently over medium heat in a skillet with some of the sauce.
Microwave
Reheat in short intervals and spoon a little extra sauce over the chicken first to prevent it from drying out.
Frequently Asked Questions
What temperature should chicken breast reach?
Chicken breast should reach an internal temperature of 165°F at the thickest part before serving.
Can I use bottled lemon juice?
You can, but fresh lemon juice gives the best flavor.
Why is my chicken dry?
The most common reason is overcooking. Use an instant-read thermometer and remove the chicken once it reaches 165°F.
Can I use olive oil instead of butter?
Yes, but the flavor will be different. Butter gives the sauce its rich finish. You can also use a combination of olive oil and butter.
Can I make this ahead of time?
You can season the chicken and arrange everything in the baking dish a few hours ahead, then refrigerate until you’re ready to bake.
Is this spicy?
No. Lemon pepper gives plenty of flavor but only mild heat. Add red pepper flakes if you want more spice.
What’s the best way to get more lemon flavor?
Use fresh lemon juice, fresh lemon slices, and a little lemon zest over the finished chicken.

Can you use drumsticks?
Hey there! So for this recipe it is for chicken breast and there would be a difference in cook time and the outcome for drumsticks. I say if you’d like to make drumsticks you can still you the seasoning but the temperature and cook time will differ along with the texture it won’t be crispy with this one. If you’d like a baked drumstick recipe you can use the seasoning from this one on my baked drumsticks recipe!
hi! what kind of rice would you say pairs best with this recipe?
Hey there! I love just making some white rice and use the pan drippings on top for some extra flavor! I aslo like to pair it with roasted asparagus or steamed mixed vegetables. It just depends on how much time I have :).
Do you leave the breasts how they come out of the package or do you butterfly them/cut them in half to make them thinner?
I usually don’t cut them but I have seen some that are pretty large and you can cut them!
It’s really easy to make, me and my hubby loved it. But we also both love lemon! So of course we doubled the lemon juice! Super good. I used chicken tenderloins, and cooked at 400 at 40 mins.
I just made this for the second week in a row. By far the best lemon pepper recipe I have tried. I especially love taking the cooked lemon and squeezing the juice over the rice I make to go with it. My son is a huge fan of it. One recipe is enough for his week of lunches. Thanks for this yummy recipe. I am excited to see what else you have to try.
This dish is delicious as described. I will be adding it to my dinner favorites. Its perfect for a quick week night meal. Fresh roasted veggies are an excellent addition.
