Combine all the ingredients (excluding the bread) in a medium bowl or shallow dish and whisk until smooth.
Preheat a frying pan over low-medium heat or set a griddle to 350°F, and lightly grease with oil or cooking spray.
Dip a slice of bread into the mixture, ensuring both sides are coated, then gently shake off any excess.
Cook for 2-4 minutes on one side until golden brown, then flip and cook the other side until golden and puffy.
Repeat with the remaining slices, adjusting the heat as needed. Serve immediately with syrup and whipped cream.
